The Alice Springs Telegraph Station, Alice Springs NT
“Twenty British soldiers built this repeater station in 1871 because it was practically the centre of the telegraph line from Darwin to Adelaide and it enabled fast and direct communication between Britain and Australia. The completion of the line commenced a new era in Australia, for it enabled fast and direct communication between Britain and her independent Australian colonies. It was the first European settlement in the region and later on it became a home and school for aboriginal children.”
