Newcastle Gaol, Toodyay WA
“The gaol was built between 1862 and 1865. Between 1912 and 1940 it was a family home. It took a long time to build this gaol because they didn’t have enough skilled labour and none of the convicts knew how to work with stones. After 1940 the building was abandoned. A lot of other country towns were knocking them down but Toodyay was doing the opposite by pouring money into having them restored and turned into a museum.”
